Your telegram of October 6th was referred to
Chinese naval headquarters. Reply is that warships
Ping Han, Hai Pu and Kwong Ken were sent from Canton
last Thursday and more than 100 soldiers by land.
Canton authorities are evasive about cowperation
and it is useless to expect any definite proposals
from them on the subject. They told me verbally
however that they did not object and the only thing
to do now is for the British warshipe to get in
touch with the Chinese gunboats and arrange things
on the spot.
Please Repeat to Commodore.
